View Full Version : Still want to do a MINI Mod day

I am still wanting to do a mod day. I have 2 mods I want to do.

1. We (that is, both Kathy and I) bought the Ian's auto window up module, one for her car, one for mine. I'd like the help of a mod day to install in both of our MINIs

2. I have the Hella rally lights. However, they are tied to the high beam switch and only come on when we have the high beams on. So, I'd like to rewire these to have its own switch. On NAM, I've seen the separate switch installed in 2 places, under the steering wheel where I have the parcel shelf, or next to the switch that moves the mirrors.

So, is anyone interested in a mod day and, where could we have it? We should probably wait until after the holidays :p . when there are more mods to install from gifts.

So what say you all? Any ideas, where? In January, it would need to be indoors, probably.

Definately indoors :)

Greg,
Dont you have a few mods you are needing to put on?

I should have a sway bar coming that I need to put on. Maybe one or two more mods by the new year...maybe an M7 ultimate grille for Christmas. :D

Jason helped me doing the beltline today, and he painted my side vents to flat black, looks sick. pics will be posted as soon as the fuel cap is powder coated and black mirrors installed.

anybody interested in the black beltline, let Jason or me know.

super stickies are next, but most likely this mod would not be suitable....

I enjoy the chrome on mine...don't think blackened would look all that good. I would never powder coat the gas cap because it looks too cool chromed. To each his own I guess. :)

Hey, don't hijack the thread -- its about a mod DAY not mods. :p

Looks like there are mods to be done. So lets keep the idea open.

weezer: Not on your car, like you said, to each his own.

Back to thread, yeah, I would be interested, but since you have commitments on Sunday, and I work on Saturdays I don't think it is going to work for me. Anyways, I will keep an eye on this mod-day thread.

We could always do it Sunday afternoon to accomodate everyone.

For a mod day don't we need mods, so why can't we talk about them? Steve, you even listed your mods that you want to do in your original post. I don't think we were hijacking the thread. :p :flame :eek2

Anyways, I would be interested if I get the lower, front grille for christmas. I don't think I would do the swaybar at a mod-day unless someone that has experience installing it themselves is there to help.

I will have a couple of mods to put on in the new year. I already know my parents are getting me the M7 grille and I just ordered Ian's auto up circuit. I don't think I will have any problems with the auto up circuit, but I wouldn't mind some help taking off the front bumper and fitting the grille. Maybe we can find a reasonably warm day next month to have it. I don't know where we would do it indoors.

i don't mind taking your front bumper off and put it back on, the problem is you gotta catch me at the right time or you gotta come home and wake me up :D I am off the first week of January, and spend a lot of time looking for a new house and putting couple of stuff on my car, so that would be a suitable time for me. what do you think?

BTW, I can help doing blackened belt line (Jason is going to laugh now) ;)

So, when are you blackening out the tail lights and the chrome around them? ;)

I only have January 2nd off I think. I'm a slave engineer. :(

there is some legal issues with that i guess, i will have to ask about it, otherwise it is an easy mod.

A girl in the Houston MINI club has them on a yellow convertible. I think her name is Michelle. She might be someone to ask about any problems with them.

Alright, so lets tentatively set the 7th of January as the day. Now all we need is where and what time. :)

Hi, I'm Nozz, from north Texas. Though I can't make your mod day, I wanted to ask you about the sway bar. I'm thinking of getting the JCW front sway bar to go with my MCS JCW. What do you think? Is it worth it?

you do not need front sway bar, however rear sway bar is a must. Ask Weezer for more details, because he just has one installed. I drove couple of cars with rear sway bar, really nice. Our cars tend to understeer and rear sway bar, brings it to more neutral. Adding a front sway bar is going to increase the understeer. Unless you have a real stiff comp. rear sway bar, then it is different story. At that time, with a front sway bar, the car will act different, you gotta know what you are doing. Good luck

JCW doesn't make any sway bars as far as I know. I assume you are talking about the JCW strut brace which is a whole different animal. The JCW front strut brace won't make an easily noticeable difference on the street, if any difference at all. Strut braces are designed to reduce chassis bending and flexing by adding a brace to the struts. The MINI already has an extremely stiff structure, so there really isn't a great need to stiffen it up more. If you want to add something shiny and cool looking under the hood then it will do that. It's just not a major performance mod.

A larger rear sway bar will give you a very noticeable change in handling. A couple of weekends ago I installed the H-sport comp bar, which is a 22mm effective rear sway bar. Right now I have it on the middle of three stiffness settings, which is about 300% stiffer than the stock bar. Understeer(the front end sliding at the limit) is nearly gone and it handles pretty much neutral. I think it is fantastic. The only drawback is a slightly less comfortable ride since the two rear wheels are linked together more. The front sway bar really isn't necessary.

Well, not necessarily uncomfortable but it rides a lot different at times. Springs probably would be more uncomfortable for sure.

Yeah, I'll show you what the auto can do. ;) :thumbsup

I think that's our best bet. I thought about maybe having it at my work, but they like to have control of who has access to what. There really isn't much space right now too since we have so many projects going on. So I guess maybe at your friend Gabe's place or else it'll be outside. :eek2

i talked to him today briefly, he liked the idea, however i will have to visit him and put the deal on the table and see what he says. He is trying to get into import aftermarket deal, so we can create a market for him. I already agreed on carrying his logo on my car for couple of freebies here and there (it is not how much money you have, it is who you know, always :thumbsup ). I should have something tangible first of next week. I will have one of his guys install a ssusp. set at that day, so kinda excited about this deal....

We need to get Will start putting stuff on Dr. Evil, it is right about time.

Steve, do you need anything particular to be handled that day, or are you going to freestyle?

Oooo, what suspension set is it now? :p Does that mean I'll get the H-sports? :D

It sounds like this place is open weekends, so I might consider using them in the future. Do you know if they do alignments?

Maybe. I wanted to get some sport struts like Koni's or Bilsteins to go with the H-sports though. Those would take some time to piece together(need to save up some more dough). I could really use some more rear camber with the sway bar now. I don't know...I still have some time to make my mind up. ;)

You might appreciate this. My parents ordered me the M7 ultimate grille through the M7 website but they didn't have anything to specify color. So my dad called them up and asked them what they sent and they said they had sent a black one. He asked M7 what to do if I wanted the other color then would I just have to send it back, and they said yeah just send it back and they'll switch it. Well my parents got the black one a few days ago and today they got a silver one! :eek2 So now we have to return the silver one. I don't really know why they mailed them both out. That M7 is an interesting outfit.

I will definetly consider getting alignments done there after I see the shop and if its not too pricey. :thumbsup

Steve,

I just installed Ian's auto-up circuit today, so I should be able to help. It was actually pretty simple. I tried the blind method first, but there really isn't enough room to do it on the '05s. So I loosened up the downtubes like I did before for taking out the stereo to install my ipod adapter. Then you can take out the entire toggle switch bar and unplug and plug the connectors then it's ready to go. :thumbsup

I talked to Randy from Webb Motorsports this morning and he said he would love to run to South Texas for a pulley party if we put together 6-7 guys. I know Steve has a pulley, but I am seriously interested in this deal, so combine the party with our mod day, would be a lot of fun, especially with Randy.

guys, I am seriously working on this deal, I do not want to BS Randy or other places. I am kinda disappointed from the NAM Calender experience. So everyone check their schedules and finances before i start this deal. I really would enjoy a day with Randy and have fun.

So i will call him back tomorrow and talk about the details to work on a package. I count myself 1, and need at least 5 more to put this together.

I will post the cost of pulley with installation tomorrow. We go from there.

As long as you let me know the cost and date beforehand, then I will be able to let you know for sure. I can understand about being disappointed about the calendar. I was pretty disappointed when 4 or 5 people said they would show up for a run, but not one showed up. You're either in or not. If you aren't sure if you can go then say that. If you commit then I expect you to show or at least give a reasonable notice that you can't make it. That's just my opinion and I think it's pretty fair. Honestly, after that experience I really don't want to try to start anything here anymore.

Berk, I don't know how you continue to keep trying to get things started. I commend you for that. A pulley day with Randy Webb would be a big event and that would be horrible if a bunch of people said they would do it, but when he shows up there are only 2 or 3 of us there. He would come all this way and I suspect he would be very disappointed if that happened.

A little later on in the spring would probably be a good time if we can get this worked out though. That way people might be getting tax returns back and have some money to spend. :thumbsup Usually a pulley with install runs about $300 I think.

The San Antonio MINI scene has been rather disjointed since Ash left for England about 18 months ago. He was sort of the "spiritual" leader, if you will. On the runs I arranged, the Shiner run had 5 MINIs from San Antonio/Austin, and the Hill Country run had 7 MINIs. Many signed up last minute, and for each run, the "commitment" was loose.

Perhaps if you request a deposit for the pulley day, people who paid would actually commit.
