I finally decided I had time to install my Alta 15% SC pulley. All in all not that difficult. I had also purchased the deluxe puller that does not require you to remove the tensioner or the belt. Only had to remove passenger side motor mount nuts/bolts since the engine does not have to be raised as high compared to some of the other pullers. I was done in around an hour and a half.
Went for a drive out Hwy 71. You can definitely notice a difference from about 2500 rpms on up. A very nice improvement for not a lot of expense.

Glad you like it. :thumbsup I want to put one on, but need to figure out what this noise is that my engine is making first. If you hold the throttle in a certain position it makes a high pitched squeel or whistle sound. If you apply more throttle it goes away and if you back off it disappears too. I'm thinking it is either the throttle or bypass valve. It only does it around 2000-3000RPM. On NAM people said it could be the belt or tensioner pulley too. I first noticed it when I had the stock intake on and brought it in to get checked at the dealer. They said the engine made normal noises and they couldn't hear what I was talking about. Now I put on the Alta intake and it's a lot louder. That leads me to believe it's something in the intake chain like the throttle or bypass valve.

If you get it put on by the MINI Center then you should be less likely to have warranty problems I would think. If a pulley dies or something attached to one then you'll probably be out of luck though. That's why I'm still holding off until I feel things are running reliably and there aren't any weird noises, etc.

I think the question is about warranty and the MINI Center. I once was told rattles in my car would no longer be fixed because the regional tech saw aftermarket (H-Sport) springs on my vehicle. Although the absurdity of a direct link between plastic on plastic interior trim design and my choice of springs was undeniable to a reasoning person it wasn’t worth fighting for. You folks with later models have been denied the satisfaction of tracking down every pesky annoying noise and fixing it.
Any decision to deviate from stock carries with it some responsibility. If you’re not comfortable with that, then don’t do it. There is no shame in enjoying the stock MINI until the warranty expires. There are many problems I corrected myself during the warranty period such as the vibration damper, belt tensioner and bypass valves not because they weren’t warranty valid but because I knew if I performed the work it would be done right. It was worth it for me to take responsibility.
I had the 15% reduction pulley for 40,000 miles and the 19% for 8,000 plus. I’ve got a stack of service reports and the only warranty work denied was because of the lowering springs. The reduction pulley is a worthwhile modification if you are not satisfied with stock performance. They’re thousands of aftermarket pulley modified cars that have gone before you and the track record is good. Take your time with the install, follow directions, use the correct tools, and you will enjoy the results.

I have a noise coming from the rear right side, i will take it to Bill sometimes this week if he is available to check and see what is up with it, hope they don't refuse to work on it, since i have my h-sports
you are correct Keith, there is thousands of people with the 15% pulley and i am going to be one of them pretty soon. Have you guys been to Autobahn before? They work on BMWs and I was refered by a friend to that place for regular services such as oil change etc...
Hey, Keith, easy on the English man, especially your posts on NAM, i have to run them through my wife to figure out what you are saying, RESPECTFULLY :D
Randy about how much time did this take? What tools did you need?

It took about 1.5 hours.
Tools:
#2 Phillips
10mm socket
13mm socket
16mm socket
16mm wrench
18mm socket
24mm socket (for puller bolt)
Deluxe puller (doesn't require the removal of the tensioner)
Pry bar
small drill bit to disable tensioner
Floor jack
pair of jack stands
small chunk of 2x4
Since my car is an '05 and I had the deluxe puller I didn't to remove the driver side motor mount bolts, air box, etc. Saves considerable time.
I could be persuaded to loan out the puller for a Shiner Bock or two. :)
That's about it the best I remember.
Randy
PS: Those of you down San Antonio way should motor out to Bandera tonight and see my friend Django Walker play.

I am getting a 17% pulley, colder plugs, and a smaller belt soon. Not sure when I'll put them on yet, but I should be getting them in the mail next week. :D
