Wow, no posts in the "off topic" area . . . hum.

Any of you San Antonio guys remember a hot rod VW shop in converse on Walzem Road called White Wind (or high Performance Motors)? Would have been there around 1970-75. I worked there for a while after hours when I was stationed at Randolph. We built Dune Buggys and hot rod VWs. I had a 63 VW 1200 with 92mm jugs and a weber 48 IDA 2v. The jugs pushed it to 1720cc and it pulled 148 hp on an old water brake dyno. Ran the quarter in the middle 16s at about 86 mph. Quick for a bug. That was fun stuff. We used to street race on the old Austin highway near the Arbys on weekend nights. Watched a guy blow up a 396 Chevelle there one time. Thank goodness I grew out of that behavior . . . So, lets hear some car stories from old San Antonio.

Hi UJ,

I have only been in SA for 10 years, however I should admit that the car culture in SA is very underground, it is yet to be discovered, there is a lot of car guys and car clubs, however no quality events nor activities. This was the main idea of establishing this club (I am not the founder, only one of them, like all you guys, just brought the idea to Will, and he was already exchanging thoughts with others anyways), bringing the car culture out and showing our passion to others and sharing our experiences. Looks like you have a lot of experience, and trust me I will ask millions of questions, Uncle:)

Back to San Antonio, and your VW hot-rod experiences, any pics from old times? Or do you still have one of those bugs in the garage?

Austin Highway was kind of dead for several years, however since last year, I see more and more events being held on good old Austin Highway. No more races (thx to Alamo Hights police), but like I said it is coming back very strong...

I think I have one of me in my 20s and the VW. I'll try to find it tonight. It's pretty funny.

Grew up with the drag scene that occured out Blanco Road, and out on Military Dr. near Camp Bullis. Had a '69 442 . Usual stuff, cops showing up grabbing keys, and tossing them in the bushes for everyone to round up. Seasoned veterans always kept an extra set handy!

Friend had a Vega GT with a 350 smallblock in it, that could really get wound up, usually ran in the low 12's. Best run on my 442 was about 15 flat.

As you saw a Chevelle burned up I got to see a GS Stage I land wheels up in a concrete drainage culvert on Blanco Rd. just past Churchill HS. Kind of hit the edge, rolled in, and just stopped wheels up. No one hurt at all except for the car. Dragging it out only added to the injury.
